Nkem Ndefo’s career began in the late 1980s, providing community health education to distressed populations including IV drug addicts and youth in foster care and inner-city schools. She witnessed intense suffering in these communities; her desire to relieve this suffering spurred her pursuit for the knowledge, understanding, and skills necessary to bring health at its deepest level to all age groups.
Certified as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Midwife, Nkem also has extensive post-graduate training in complementary health modalities and emotional therapies. She has worked as a clinician, educator, and researcher in settings ranging from large-volume hospitals to small community clinics, and has maintained a busy holistic health private practice in Los Angeles since 2001.
She is the founder of TRE Los Angeles and creator of The Resilience Toolkit. Additionally she serves on the steering committee for the Greater Los Angeles Trauma-Informed Task Force and on the Los Angeles County Trauma-Informed Systems Change Initiative Workgroup.

As Social Entrepreneurs, our members are driven by making a positive impact in their community and in their business practices. Nkem Ndefo's instruction acted as a catalyst for our members to recognize not only the role of trauma in their own lives but the role trauma plays in the communities they serve. They came away from the trauma-informed workshop inspired and energized.
Nkem has an amazing combination of bright clarity softened by attunement and the ability to provide a connective container for her students. Maybe it’s a midwife thing - she knows you can’t have the baby for someone, so it’s paramount that she give the client/student the sense that they can do it and that she is here with them and yet they need to step up in whatever way (or slow down and pay attention). She does it beautifully.
Nkem is a super mentor. Simultaneously, she was able to enlighten, encourage, instruct, inspire, and support me in my journey to become more capable as a TRE practitioner. In my experience, the quality of Nkem's counsel is rare indeed and I feel so fortunate to learn from and work with her.
Nkem Ndefo, CNM, is a gifted speaker who not only educates, but truly motivates! She not only delivers information that is beneficial to providers who care for women who have experienced stress and trauma, but cleverly has participants “take a selfie” to reflect on their personal areas of stress and unreleased tension. I was floored to think that my own unresolved tension and trauma could affect the relationship with my patients and potentially influence their health outcomes. Nkem’s message that we must learn to release tension/trauma is a critical one for providers, therapists, and, frankly, for any person desirous of healthy personal and professional relationships.
