Nkem Ndefo, CNM, is a gifted speaker who not only educates, but truly motivates! She not only delivers information that is beneficial to providers who care for women who have experienced stress and trauma, but cleverly has participants “take a selfie” to reflect on their personal areas of stress and unreleased tension. I was floored to think that my own unresolved tension and trauma could affect the relationship with my patients and potentially influence their health outcomes. Nkem’s message that we must learn to release tension/trauma is a critical one for providers, therapists, and, frankly, for any person desirous of healthy personal and professional relationships.
As an educator and coordinator of classes for a major trauma center, I had the challenge of finding techniques that will help nurses deal with the trauma they see every day. TRE Los Angeles held several classes for more than 150 registered nurses. Since then, nurses have reported to me that [the classes] have benefited them by releasing the trauma that they have held in over so many years. We all had a sense of looseness and calmness after the class. It felt natural and easy.
I was in the most pain I had ever been in due to a long-term on-and-off injury in my left shoulder. I had never had the shoulder treated but was in so much pain that it woke me from my sleep and I couldn’t do my regular daily activities. I had concluded that it was time to have something done. Nkem took me the through the exercises and I quickly experienced how relaxing it was. I had small waves of tremors and a small emotional moment. Something in me just needed to release, and it did. Immediately afterward my shoulder felt 80% better! Over the following few days, it improved back to 100%. I HIGHLY recommend this for anyone, but especially for those of us first responders manning the front lines with constant high- and low-level stressors, and for the many with chronic, seemingly unresolvable, injuries. The body can do amazing things if you equip it with what it needs to heal!
